Holderness Grange: England International In The Pink at Retirement Village

Former World Champion of Champions Mark Walton brought his trademark pink bowls to Hedon when he recently opened a new bowling green at the Holderness Grange Retirement Village. Known throughout the sport as the Yorkshire Barbie Boy because of his pink bowls, Mark gave bowling tips to residents of the retirement village.

Mark said: “The new green is another excellent facility for residents at Holderness Grange. The green is already looking really good, although at this time of year it’s bound to be playing a touch on the heavy side. Once we get into the summer it will harden off and play much better.”

“Flat green bowls is very popular in East Yorkshire and it’s good to see that the residents at Holderness Grange have formed their own bowling club and are planning to take part in local competitions,” he added.

The Holderness Grange Bowling Club currently has about 15 members and this number is expected to grow as more residents move into the 143-home retirement village. The Club will start with friendly games in the run up to taking part in competitive matches next season.

Holderness Grange Estates Manager Andrée Nolan said: “Residents are really looking forward to using the bowling green and brushing up on their skills and technique.”

Mark, who lives in Hornsea, recently returned from New Zealand where he was part of the England team which finished fifth in the World Bowls Championships. He has been an England international since 2003 and was World Champion of Champions in 2005.

As well as the bowling green, Holderness Grange residents also have access to a gymnasium, dance studio, fitness and exercise classes, line dancing, arts and crafts, hair and beauty salon, restaurant and bar, library, and family room.
